Dr. Yanni instructs ASIPP® Lumbar Endoscopic Spinal Decompression Course

Dr. Yanni instructs ASIPP® Lumbar Endoscopic Spinal Decompression Course

This content was medically reviewed by Baher S. Yanni, MD, on December 11th, 2019.

In November, Dr. Baher Yanni from Spine Institute of America instructed an interventional pain course for physicians in Memphis. On behalf of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP®), he led a class and workshop with industry-leading pain doctors. These educational sessions centred around lumbar endoscopic spinal decompression, a procedure for patients with severe spinal pressure.

What Is Lumbar Endoscopic Spinal Decompression?

During lumbar endoscopic spinal decompression, the surgeon relieves pressure on nerves in the lower (lumbar) spine. Conditions like spinal stenosis and sciatica press on nerves in the lumbar spine. A lumbar spinal decompression procedure involves removing or fusing parts of the spine to lessen the pressure. The “endoscopic” term in the procedure name refers to the use of an endoscope. This instrument enters the spine through a small incision to give doctors a view of the issue without extensive surgery.

About the Course and Workshop

The ASIPP® lumbar endoscopic spinal decompression course and workshop took place during the first weekend of November 2019. Attendees first participated in a course on Friday. Then, participants who registered for the cadaver workshop received hands-on learning on Saturday and Sunday.

Comprehensive Review Course

Medical professionals of all experience levels could attend the comprehensive review course. During this day-long event, participants took part in basic, intermediate and advanced endoscopic lessons. Dr. Yanni presented on endoscopic decompression for central spinal stenosis and transforaminal endoscopic decompression.

Cadaver Workshop

After the review course, some of the participants also participated in a hands-on cadaver workshop. Throughout these sessions, learners could practice lumbar endoscopic spinal decompression techniques. The workshop featured basic and intermediate levels to accommodate physicians at any level of experience.

The Importance of Ongoing Education in Interventional Pain Care

In the field of pain medicine, ongoing education leads to better care for patients. Courses like the ASIPP® event improve these aspects of spine treatment:

  • Quality of care: By using modern spine surgery techniques, interventional pain physicians can provide better care.
  • Safety: Ongoing learning helps pain physicians keep safety measures fresh in their minds for upcoming procedures.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Courses for ongoing learning allow pain physicians to optimize their use of time and resources to save you money on services.
