Scoliosis vs. Kyphosis: How Are They Different?
Spinal deformities come in many different forms. Two of the most common spinal deformities are scoliosis and kyphosis. While both of these spinal deformities cause curvatures in the spine and can even occur simultaneously, there are significant differences between these conditions. Learn more about what makes scoliosis and kyphosis different.
What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine. While most cases of scoliosis are mild, display few symptoms and don’t require any treatment, more severe cases can be painful, depending on the degree of the curvature.
Scoliosis most commonly affects the lower back or the upper spine, but the curvature can occur in any part of the spine. This condition creates a sideways C- or S-shaped curve in the spine.
What Is Kyphosis?
Kyphosis is a spinal deformity that causes a forward rounding of the spine, which creates a hunchback. Kyphosis occurs in the middle and upper part of the back. Similar to scoliosis, minor cases of kyphosis have a few symptoms and don’t require treatment. More severe cases of kyphosis can cause neck and back pain and may require surgery to straighten the spine into its proper shape.
What Is Kyphoscoliosis?
Kyphoscoliosis is a combination of scoliosis and kyphosis. This condition affects the spine in both the coronal and sagittal planes, causing the spine to curve to the side and forward or backward. The symptoms of kyphoscoliosis vary between patients. While people experience a hunch or slouch, more severe cases can damage the lungs, heart and other organs due to the shape of the spine.
How Do You Treat These Spinal Deformities?
There are several treatment options available for these spinal deformities that can help with pain and correct the shape of the spine curvature. The best type of treatment for you depends on the severity of your condition.
For minor cases of scoliosis and kyphosis, a back brace can help straighten the spine and alleviate the curvature. Stretching and physical therapy can also relieve pain or discomfort that comes from these spinal deformities.
If your scoliosis or kyphosis is more severe, spinal surgery may be necessary. Spinal surgeries can help correct the spine’s abnormalities of the spine and surrounding bones.
