Spinal Surgery FAQ: Disadvantages and Medications

If you are considering back surgery, there are many questions you need answered. At the Spine INA, we understand that nobody hopes to get surgery in life. We can help make the journey easier.

In our last few blogs, we have answered common questions about minimally invasive sciatica treatment and more. We know what it takes to give relief with a minimum of risk and recovery. In this blog, we are going to answer two more frequently-asked questions.

  1. Compared to traditional surgery, what are the disadvantages of minimally invasive surgery?
    • The main disadvantage of minimally invasive surgery is its newness. Because it hasn’t been around as long as traditional surgery, there are developments yet to be made.
    • Minimally invasive surgery requires a higher level of training, and insufficient training can lead to complications.
    • Depending on how complex your operation is, it may take you longer to recover than if you had traditional surgery.
    • The above disadvantages are present for traditional surgery, too. That is why it is so important to have conversations
  2. Will I need pain medication after my operation? Will I become dependent on it?
    • It is common to have medication to help with pain after any operation, and minimally invasive surgery is no exception. The medications make it easier to get through that difficult first week or two by giving your body the relief it needs to recover.
    • It is absolutely possible to get the benefits of pain medications without getting dependent. Talk to your surgeon about any concerns.
