Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Dysfunction

There are many different terms for sacroiliac joint problems. You might hear your spine specialist refer to it as:

  • SI joint dysfunction
  • SI joint strain
  • SI joint syndrome
  • SI joint inflammation

The name used will correspond to your specific condition and what’s causing the pain in your sacroiliac joint.

The SI joint is in your lower back. It is the joint where your sacrum and ilium meet. The sacrum is the vertebra at the end of your spine while the ilium is made up of three bones at the top of your pelvis.

This joint helps to support the weight of your body across your pelvis, sort of like a shock absorber for the spine. The bones that make up this joint can become misaligned, though, and cause joint pain, particularly in the lower back. It’s commonly a sharp pain that starts in your hips and moves down into your thighs. You might also experience numbness, tingling, or a feeling that your legs are going to give out underneath you.
