Busting Sciatica Myths! Part 3

Busting Sciatica Myths! Part 3

This content was medically reviewed by Baher S. Yanni, MD, on December 15th, 2016.

When you have sciatica, life looks different for you than for everyone else.

Just sitting down can be difficult. Many people who have sciatica suffer quietly, convinced that there isn’t any way to find complete relief. If this describes you or a loved one, chances are good that you have been fooled by some of the myths surrounding sciatica. Additionally, chances are good that you’ve be treated by teams that aren’t fully equipped to address your needs. Because sciatica is created by an underlying issue, if a physician doesn’t have the skill to fully understand and solve the issue, the sciatica will persist. At the Spine INA, we have learned that it is possible to cure sciatica without completely opening up your back. However, the decision is yours at the end of the day.

We want to empower you to make informed decisions for your back. In our last blog, we busted a big myth about a slipped disc being the only cause of sciatica. Today, we have a few more myths to dispel for you!

MYTH: Sciatica is genetic

Just because relatives have sciatica doesn’t mean that’s why you have it too. Sciatica doesn’t run in families. It only shows up when certain lower back issues occur, and they can happen to anyone. If you are worried that a certain lower back issue may run in your family, make an appointment with us and let us figure out just what is going on.

MYTH: Sciatica treatment is the same for all patients

If you suffer from sciatica, this is one of the most important myths to understand. If doctors are telling you that you are out of options because a certain treatment failed, you can’t believe them. Sciatica happens because of issues in the lower back, and believe us, the lower back is complex enough that it’s dangerous to generalize anything. If a doctor does generalize, find someone else. In fact, you can just save yourself time and contact us. We offer tailor-made sciatica treatment because we know that what works for one person may not work for the next. If you feel like you’ve run out of treatment options, we will show you just how wrong you are.

MYTH: Bed rest is enough to relieve sciatica

You may already know this is false because you have tried it! Bed rest can give relief for the first few days, but if you continue to be inactive, you’ll make the sciatica worse. Your back needs exercise and activity to stay strong. The spinal discs need the nutrients boosted by exercise. The ultimate solution to sciatica is professional treatment, not your bed – no matter how comfortable it may be!

Don’t let sciatica take over your life. Turn to the experienced team at the Spinal Institute of North America and let us bring you relief!
