Tips for Expressing Pain to Your Doctor – Part 2
Anyone who’s ever been in pain knows how difficult it can be to communicate. Pain has a way of wearing a person down, and it can seem to take forever to make a doctor’s appointment, get to the appointment, and finally reach the ears of your doctor. The problem is, once you’ve got your doctor’s attention, you’re in a key moment, and you need to express how you feel effectively. Otherwise, you may end up with solutions that don’t work. At the Spine INA, we understand how medical professionals are trained to listen to patients, and we want to share some insights on things you should (and should not) say.
In our last blog, we talked about wise it is to keep internet research you’ve done to yourself. In today’s blog, we want to talk about how to detail the actual pain you’re experiencing.
Be Specific
- You may hurt all over, but telling your doctor that gives him or her very little to work with. Chances are good the pain is more intense in some areas, and if you can point them out to the doctor, you’ll be in business. Try to keep the pained areas between one and three locations. At the same time, it’s okay to say that the pain in those locations is affecting the rest of you!
Even though communication is hard when you’re suffering, if you can hold on to these basic concepts, things should go better for you. We would love to be the specialists you talk to.
