What Is the MILD® Procedure?

MILD® is an acronym for Minimally invasive lumbar decompression. It’s a relatively new method of treating patients who have moderate to severe Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), which is a condition where the spinal canal becomes narrow, causing pain in the lower part of the back.

With this procedure, we can help relieve your back pain so that you can quickly return to your normal, daily activities. This procedure requires a very small incision. Instead of traditional open surgery, we use MILD® spine surgery in central New Jersey for quick pain relief and fast recovery.

Treating LSS through open surgery can lead to instability in the spine. But our minimally invasive lumbar decompression used in NJ focuses on removing overgrown ligament and bone at the lower part of the spine. Patients enjoy relief from pain and improved mobility. This approach also prevents spinal instability and avoids the use of invasive fusion surgery.

Who Is a Candidate for the Procedure in Central New Jersey?

MILD® spine surgery in NJ is suitable for patients who have moderate or severe lumbar spinal stenosis. These patients find it difficult to stand for more than a few minutes, and they can’t walk for long distances without having severe pain. When such patients don’t want to go through open spine surgery or use conservative treatment, we offer the MILD® procedure instead.

What Is the Success Rate for This Procedure?

The procedure has a reported success rate of 80 percent. Thousands of patients have received the MILD® treatment since it was approved by the FDA in 2008.

A comprehensive study published by the American Academy of Pain Medicine showed that the MILD® procedure is effective and safe over the long-term. The research combined the results of eight studies carried out at 32 different sites in North America. It showed that none of the patients had any of the complications associated with other endoscopic or microscopic procedures used to treat LSS. Patients observed for 12 months following the procedure showed that the results were stable and reliable.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Clinical studies performed at top health institutions across the United States and Canada show that MILD® had the following effects:

  • No device-related complications
  • LSS patients helped to stand up longer and walk longer distances with reduced pain
  • Standing time increased from eight minutes before the procedure to 56 minutes
  • Walking time increased from 246 feet to 3,956 feet

What Is the Recovery Time for the MILD® Procedure?

Patients who undergo the MILD® spine treatment should experience fast recovery. Depending on the severity of the spinal stenosis, patients can go back to work within a few days to resume lighter and less physically demanding tasks.

MILD® is an outpatient procedure, and there are no implants left inside the body. It requires no stitches or general anesthesia, so recovery occurs faster than with open surgery.

Despite these results, the procedure isn’t suited for everybody. All lumbar surgeries have certain risks associated with bleeding, infection and nerve injury. That’s why we perform a thorough examination and diagnosis at Spine INA before we recommend or perform the MILD® procedure. Contact us today for more information or to discuss treatments.
